A serious multi-vehicle collision in Saint-Paulin, Quebec, on Friday morning has left two people, including a young girl, with life-threatening injuries, according to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
Emergency crews responded to the crash shortly after 7:15 a.m. at the intersection of Rang des Douze-Terres and Rang Saint-Louis in the Mauricie region. The collision triggered a significant emergency response involving paramedics, firefighters, and provincial police officers.
Preliminary information from the SQ indicates that the first collision occurred when a vehicle traveling on Rang des Douze-Terres attempted to turn onto Rang Saint-Louis. As the vehicle entered the intersection, it was struck by an oncoming car traveling in the opposite direction.
One occupant of the turning vehicle sustained critical injuries. SQ spokesperson Louis-Philippe Ruel confirmed that authorities fear for the individual’s life.
The second vehicle was carrying three occupants. Two people suffered minor injuries, while a young girl sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
“We fear for her life as well,” Ruel said while providing an update on the victims’ conditions.
Moments after the initial impact, a third vehicle approached the crash scene but was unable to avoid the wreckage. The vehicle collided with the damaged cars, resulting in a second crash. The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries.
Emergency responders worked quickly to assist the victims, stabilize the injured, and secure the area. Those with critical injuries were transported to hospital, while others received treatment for less serious injuries.
Because of the severity of the collision, Rang des Douze-Terres remained closed for several hours as collision reconstruction specialists and investigators examined the scene. Police are documenting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and working to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the crashes.
At this time, authorities have not identified the victims or disclosed what may have contributed to the collision. Investigators have also not indicated whether weather, road conditions, speed, or other factors played a role. No charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
