Ethan Lee Kitts and Harvey Wayne Richards Accident – Obituary Michigan: In Loving Memory Of 14-Year-Old Killed In Monroe County Four-Wheeler Accident

DUNDEE, Mich. — A 14-year-old Dundee boy was killed and a 17-year-old Petersburg teen was critically injured after the four-wheeler they were riding collided with an SUV in Summerfield Township early Saturday morning, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:03 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, on Bacon Road, south of Todd Road, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

The victim was identified as Harvey Wayne Richards, 14, of Dundee, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The second rider, Ethan Lee Kitts, 17, of Petersburg, suffered critical injuries and was transported to Toledo ProMedica Hospital, where he remains under treatment.

According to the preliminary investigation, Donna Jean Cole, 54, of Petersburg, was driving a black 2013 Chevrolet Traverse and was attempting to back out of a private driveway to travel northbound on Bacon Road. As the SUV entered the roadway, it was struck on the front passenger side by a southbound black 2007 Honda TRX250 four-wheeler carrying Richards and Kitts.

Investigators said both teenagers were thrown from the ATV upon impact and came to rest on the roadway south of the crash site. Authorities reported that neither rider was wearing a helmet.

The Sheriff’s Office also determined that the Honda TRX250 was not equipped with a functioning headlight and was not authorized for use on public roadways. Investigators said those factors, along with all other circumstances surrounding the collision, remain under review as the investigation continues.

Emergency crews from the Summerfield Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Despite lifesaving efforts, Richards died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Cole and her passenger, Jimmie Lynn Cole Jr., 57, of Petersburg, were both wearing seat belts and were not injured. Investigators noted that the Chevrolet Traverse’s airbags did not deploy during the collision.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash and are working to determine whether alcohol played any role. No conclusions have been announced.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Program also responded to assist the victims’ families and provide support to first responders.

The investigation is being led by Deputy Alec Preadmore and Deputy Hunter Chirillo of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7541.

The fatal collision has deeply affected the Dundee and Petersburg communities as family members, friends, and classmates mourn the loss of Harvey Wayne Richards while hoping for Ethan Lee Kitts’ recovery. The investigation remains ongoing.
